Sandisk MicroSDHC "4gig" card a bit bigger than expected

So, I ordered a Sandisk MicroSDHC 4gig card for my phone. It was stupid cheap at $4.76. Needless to say, it didn't work in the phone.

So I thought I should go ahead and reformat it.

My laptop flat out did not like the card and refused to acknowledge its existence. So I moved on to plugging it into the Mac.

The Mac promptly saw the card and said "What the fuck?" It then asked me if I'd like to initialize the card, as that would be necessary for accessing it. I said, "Why, yes I would."

Now, the nice thing about the Mac drive initialization applet is that it tells you all sorts of nifty things about your storage devices before you press any buttons.

Guess how much space is apparently on the card, according the initialization applet.

2 terabytes.

Let me write that again as a level 2 header:

2 terabytes

I'm beginning to suspect it's broken. Or borked. Or something like that.

Ha! I have a 333mb HDD from the early mid-ninties that presumably still works, but when it's plugged in, all my computers see it as a 1tb drive — not because it's borked, but because it's old.

I've got three 2gb MicroSD cards — mostly because the price per gigabyte wasn't worth it for me to anything larger — shared between my DS and my cell phone. And even 2gb is a nearly-endless size for low-resolution 2MP cameraphone pics.

Also, I think I just realised the etymology of the word "borked" — it's a misspelling of "broken" to "broke" to "bork," which is then conjugated to "borked" in the past-tense (a past participle; the past-perfect would be "had borked").

Interestingly, in political science "bork" means "(v) to block the confirmation of a (usually judicial) nominee," after former Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork.

Where did you buy it? There are fakes out there that have nowhere near 4GB of space on them that have been hacked to read at other sizes.

Yeah, I got it OFF THE INTERNET! Amazon, actually. So that particular vendor can get some negative feedback from me.

I have since learned that my phone may not be able to read 4gig cards off the shelf. I may need to flash a ROM on the phone before I can upgrade anyway. But there's no reason that my computers couldn't read it, I think.

Interesting that the OS is set up to recognize the units... I suppose there is such thing as foresight in coding.

yeah, something is definetly not right there! I ordered a 2gig micro for my phone from newegg.com for about $10 and I just put it in and was ready to go. Sorry to hear it didn't work, that's frustrating as hell. :-(

Fortunately, it was so cheap that it was worth it just for the SD adapter that lets me stick my old MicroSD card in my reader.

And now I have an SDHC card I don't mind dissecting, though I doubt I'll see anything interesting inside it.
